The Balm of Gilead
Twice Its Weight in Gold
The word "perfume" comes from "per fumum" - through smoke. Since Neolithic times, sacred and fragrant offerings aimed at pleasing and feeding Gods, and entering in communication with them.
Of all these ancient perfumes, one stood above every other: the Balm of Gilead. Roman naturalist Pliny wrote that "every other scent ranks below balsamum."
"Balm of Gilead was sold at twice its weight in gold during the Middle Ages, and twice its weight in silver during the Roman period."
During the time of the Bible, kings were anointed solely with this balsam. It was one ingredient of the altar of the Temple of Jerusalem - used twice daily as the symbol of the alliance between God and the human being.
Today, the Balm of Gilead has nearly vanished. Each tree yields only a few grams per year - unlike frankincense or myrrh, which yield kilograms. The resin is so volatile it must be collected and sealed within hours of harvest.

In the Bible
Genesis, Chronicles, Jeremiah, Ezekiel - the Balm of Judea is the only sacred balm mentioned across both Testaments. The holy anointing oil, or holy Chrism, was traditionally composed of Judean balsam and olive oil - reserved for baptism, confirmation, and ordination.
